About the Service

The Intersection of Vocational Discovery and Professional Purpose

At EMESON, we operate on the fundamental principle that employment is more than just a means to earn a living; it is a critical pillar of adult identity, community participation, and self-worth. Too often, the vocational potential of individuals with developmental disabilities is underestimated or limited to repetitive, generic entry-level tasks. Our Career Planning service is a specialized, intensive intervention designed to help individuals with disability discover their unique professional voice, identify their competitive vocational potential, and find a career that truly resonates with their identity.

We move away from the model of simply "filling jobs" and instead treat each client as a professional-in-waiting. We engage in a forward-thinking Discovery Process, where we assess the individual as a whole person—looking past the disability to identify their aptitude, creativity, leadership potential, and vocational aspirations. This is a journey of defining professional purpose, ensuring that work is both economically sustainable and personally fulfilling.

The Deep-Dive Discovery: Strategic Vocational Assessment

The path to a successful career begins with true self-discovery. Our professional career planners work one-on-one with individuals to conduct a rigorous, Person-Centered vocational assessment. This includes:

  • Transferable Skill Identification: We identify the unique talents and skills the individual already possesses—from technological literacy to artistic creativity or interpersonal communication—that can be applied to the competitive workforce.

  • Environmental & Sensory Profile: We assess the individual's physical and sensory preferences for their work environment, determining if they thrive in quiet office settings, active retail environments, sensory-rich culinary kitchens, or outdoor spaces.

  • Vocational Goal Mapping: We help individuals look past traditional "disability-friendly" roles to find career trajectories that align with their personal identity and long-term economic aspirations.

Building a Competitive Professional Portfolio and Self-Advocacy

Once a clear career trajectory is defined, we move into the preparation phase. We assist individuals in building a comprehensive professional portfolio that demonstrates their competitive value. This involves:

  • Strategic Resume Development: Crafting documents that emphasize ability, potential, and relevant certifications rather than disability.

  • Mock Interviews and Self-Advocacy Coaching: We provide specialized training to help individuals discuss their strengths confidently with employers and, crucially, to confidently discuss their necessary work accommodations as a matter of professional right rather than charitable request.

  • Labor Market Analysis and Network Mapping: We provide data-driven labor market analysis to find disability-friendly industries with growth potential and sustainable wages, and then work to identify and utilize inclusive professional networks. By the end of this process, the individual has a clear, actionable roadmap to transition from a state of curiosity to a state of competitive readiness.
